Meningitis Outbreak Linked to Spinal Steroid Injections

Roberts Wilson, P.A. | October 3, 2012

A Spinal Meningitis Outbreak has health officials concerned and a drug compounding company temporarily shut down.  The cases of Fungal Meningitis have been linked to Spinal Steroid Injections that are routinely administered by neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons to relieve back pain.  Thousands of people who have recently recieved spinal injections for back pain could be at risk.

  • An outbreak like this indicates that manufacturing, packaging or quality control errors have occured.
  • Company responsible for contamination of injections can be held liable for injuries.
  • Compensation for Meningitis Victims and their families may be substantial.

The subject injections and preparations were produced and distributed by New England Compounding Center in Framington Massachusettes.  It is unclear which part of the preparation is contaminated with a meningitis causing fungus but the investigation is ongoing.  I will update this post as information becomes available.

Symptoms of Fungal Meningitis include but are not limited to:  Fever, Slurred Speech, Headache, Nausea, Dizziness and Stroke.  Seek medical attention immediately if you or a loved one experience any of these symptoms. Click Here to learn more about Fungal Meningitis at CDC website.
