Using Health Insurance For Car Accident

Roberts Wilson, P.A. | September 5, 2014

One of the biggest mistakes we see injury victims make before calling a lawyer is:  Not Using Health Insurance For A Car Accident.  This seems to make sense when a wreck is not your fault, but THIS IS A TRAP!  And, it can be a costly one!

Here is the deal:  Health insurance companies and government health care coverage like Medicare and Medicaid have millions of customers and because of this, they get big discounts from medical providers and hospitals.  When you pay a health insurance premium, you are paying your insurance company to take care of your medical bills. Period!  Our position is simple:  When you pay your health insurance premium every month, you become entitled to the benefits provided by your health insurance plan.

Hospitals and medical providers don’t want you to bill insurance and WILL NOT HELP YOU navigate this complicated process.  The reason they won’t help you is because hospitals and medical providers make more money from injury claims when they don’t bill health insurance.  Yep, you heard that right, hospitals and medical providers, including so called “non-profit” hospitals try to bypass health insurance so they can make more money from your claim or lawsuit.  To make matters worse, this is also when you are the most vulnerable.   We believe this practice deprives injury victims of rights they have earned by dutifully paying their health insurance premiums each month.

On the other side of the coin is the health insurance company who is just as happy to not be billed for your accident related medical bills because they do not have to pay bills that are not properly submitted. And worse, if the injury victim or inexperienced attorney fails to figure this problem out before a submission deadline, the health insurance company doesn’t  have to pay at all.  The loser in this scenario? The victim!  Insurance wins!

REMEMBER THIS:   Unsuspecting injury victims and inexperienced attorneys who fail to satisfy the prerequisites for submitting accident related medical bills to health insurance companies  are often leaving money on the table.

Don’t let the insurance companies and medical providers take advantage of you after an accident.  Protect your family and call an experienced injury attorney and be sure to discuss this important subject with them.

And, if you can remember to do so, ALWAYS BILL HEALTH INSURANCE AFTER AN AUTO ACCIDENT!!!
