SSRI Antidepressants and Risks involved

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, known as SSRIs, are antidepressant drugs that are widely prescribed for treatment of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and generalized anxiety. Popular drugs such as Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac, Lexapro, Celexa, Fluvoxamine, snd Symbyax are prescription drugs with SSRIs in them. Recent Studies have shown that mothers who take SSRIs during pregnancy are at risk of adverse health defects such as Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN).

In SSRIs, the chemicals Fluoxetine and Paroxitine may be responsible for these congenital anomolies. Although there have been many studies claiming that SSRIs do not increase this risk, just as many studies have shown that they do increase the risk of birth defects. The New England Journal of Medicine wrote this article in 2007 studying the possibility of such birth defects due to SSRIs (NEJM Article). Although the risks are slim, if your baby was born with a birth defect and you were taking one of the SSRI medications listed above during pregnancy, you may be entitled to a settlement to recover financial compensation.
