Blood Clot Filters Continue to Injure Patients

Interior Vena Cava, or IVC filters, are spider-like devices implanted in patients with an increased risk of developing blood clots. The filters are installed around the heart, and work by trapping the clots before they can move to vital organs, where they could cause life-threatening complications.
In August of 2010, the FDA released an article about IVC filters, stating that 921 complaints had been made since 2005 for things like device migration, detachment of components, perforation of the IVC, and filter failure. These complaints include side effects like internal bleeding, hematoma or nerve injury at the puncture site, puncture or other serious damage to the vena cava wall, heart or lungs, infection, and even death.
These “problem” filters are all manufactured by C.R. Bard and Cook Group, Inc., and include the Bard Recovery Filter, the Bard G2 Filter, and the Bard Express Filter.
To date, numerous complaints have been filed in various federal courts across the U.S.
